Private Eye is a fortnightly British magazine, which sees politics on a satirical angle. The magazine has no qualms criticising public figures, politicians and celebrities. Any public figure that is deemed incompetent or corrupt can receive criticism of the most scathing style. The magazine is also notorious for the several libel suits it has attracted – staying true to its style of journalism. However, it is what people like to read – spicy and high voltage. And, the popularity is such that the jokes that have appeared first in this magazine have gone on to enter popular culture.
Religiously Irking the Ruling Class
The writers of the magazine are not afraid of unearthing scandals and breaking news that can attract the wrath of the subjects. It takes the liberty to poke fun at Councillors and the Council. And, it also doesn't spare the royal family. Even the queen can get some kicking and thrashing. In short, the magazine is not afraid of carrying the news items that most newspapers are afraid to touch. That is true, not all journalists are made the same. Some journalists have the support of their media house to break news that can look like scurrilous gossips. However, this magazine is not for the fainthearted, as it has the hottest news.
However, if you are looking for gossips of extramarital affairs of public figures, this magazine isn't it. There are several other magazines that survive purely on such stories. Although this magazine doesn't have the history of breaking such stories, it comments on such reports appearing elsewhere. After all, there are spicier stuff to munch on.
In-Jokes of Private Eye
Several of the in-jokes are comprehensible only to long term readers of this magazine. Sarcastic jokes are always there in this magazine. You will find some ambiguous references, euphemistic language and a lot. They actually refer to previous jokes, which the writers have used to bring several Goliaths to knees. Thus, the magazine is not just about the most serious scandals, gossips and unravelling of incompetence of public figures, but also of the subtle humour and sarcasm.
The magazine also regularly pokes fun at the advertising industry, reports from UK & European Union parliaments, television programs, other newspapers & journalists, etc. You will also find some nice book reviews, music, etc.
That is true. The journalists are also not hidden from Private Eye. There is an eye watching their words. The editors of this magazine are quick to point out incongruence of their editorials and views. Similar thing goes to political figures. The biography of such figures are dug out and any incongruence is made the point of discussion.
