Default Colour Search

Colour Search - The ability to perform a database search has really changed the face of image libraries meaning that you can find suitable shots and have the hi-res on your layout in a matter of minutes.

This functionality works fantastically well within certain descriptive limits – “I want an image that includes a doctor” or “I want a picture that depicts sport” – but there are always limitations; the process hinges on everyone using the same keywords which – as anyone who has witnessed the sometimes comical false positives will attest – is far from assured. When this does work well, there is usually still a lot of trawling through pages of results looking for a shot that is also an aesthetic match.

That’s why a project like the Multicolr Search Lab is so interesting. In a way, what it does is quite simple but I love the idea of using visual criteria to search a visual resource. I know you always need keywords but adding a function like this to an image library search would allow designers a handy shortcut but also a great way of coming up with unusual shots by working from the colour scheme alone.

Hurrah for technology!
