Chelsea Only Manage A Draw At Newcastle And Liverpool Lose Out To Spurs

Sunday’s football had a lot of under tones and sub plots to it. Liverpool’s season has been little short of disastrous while Chelsea have seemingly hit a bit of a slippy downward spiral in recent matches. While Liverpool would have been anxious heading to a match with in-form Spurs, presumably Chelsea would have seen a trip to freezing cold Newcastle as being a way to help reinject some points into their stuttering season.

When it came to half time Liverpool would have been riding high having just taken the lead through a 42nd minute Skrtel goal. However, in the 65th minute, everything began to unravel once again as Skrtel then managed to put one in the wrong net and Lennon bagged an injury time winner in the 92nd minute giving Spurs all three points and helping their own chase for a fourth place finish and Champions League football again next season.

Chelsea, and especially boss Carlo Ancelotti, have under some fairly robust scrutiny of late having had a dreadful few weeks by their own high standards. Their significant lead at the top of the table had been cut so that it was only their superior goal difference that was keeping them there.

With United stuffing Blackburn 7-1 earlier in the weekend, it meant that the goal difference was likely to have been cut. However, they only managed a draw against Newcastle meaning that they missed out on the opportunity to once again hit the summit of the table.
