Frank Lampard Will Face United This Week

Posted on 16. Dec, 2010 by .

He’s been out of action since August but it seems that the lure of playing against bitter title rivals Manchester United has been enough to help Frank Lampard finish his comeback from injury. He’s been out for over three months with a thigh and groin injury but came through a training game today and so he will start when champions Chelsea take on league leaders Manchester United on Sunday.

The match has taken on extra importance for Chelsea in recent weeks as they have gone through a hideous spell for 7 or 8 matches picking up very few points and seemingly lacking the usual ability to score goals and keep clean sheets. As such, United have managed to haul them back from what was once a four point lead and the Reds now sit at the top of the table, clear of second placed Arsenal by two points and with a game in hand over all of their nearest rivals. In what is one of the tightest leagues for some years, Manchester City sit in third with the same points as Arsenal and Chelsea are in 4th spot a point behind them.

Chelsea will be hoping to get a win against United and will be further hoping that it will act as a catalyst to spur them in the right direction to win games and make another charge for the title. The second half of the season, though, is when Fergie believes United always come alive.

Manchester City Top Europe League Group After 1-1 Draw With Juventus

Posted on 16. Dec, 2010 by .

Manchester City have topped their Europa League group after managing a 1-1 draw with Juventus much to the delight of boss Mancini. Topping the group means that they will be seeded for the final draw which in turn means that they will avoid playing clubs that are dropping down from the Champions League after failing to make it through the group stages of the competition. Things weren’t initially going City’s way, as Juve scored first and with Lech Poznan beating Red Bull Salzburg it looked to be Lech that would head the group by the end of the matches.

Mancini had made nine changes to the team and it was Jo that became the unlikely hero. The Brazilian striker arrived at Eastlands 2 years ago along with a massive GBP18m price tag on his back; a price tag that he had so far failed to live up to. Having spent time on loan at both Everton and Galatasaray he finally made his way back to City at the beginning of this season and Mancini decided he liked the look of the striker. Jo has enjoyed a few more games this season and has repaid his appearances with two Europe League goals and three in total for the season.

Having won their group, Manchester City will now be seeded so when the draw for the final 32 is made they will avoid other group winners and those teams that have dropped down from the Champions League after failing to navigate their way through the group stages.

What Next For Blackburn?

Posted on 16. Dec, 2010 by .

Blackburn Rovers could be described as a club in decline despite having a bunch of chicken breeders as their new owners. Following the arrival of Venky’s as the clubs new owners boss Sam Allardyce was given the shove; a decision that has been derided by fans, players, and fellow managers alike. The Indian owners have said that he did not fit in with their plans of a top five or better finish while playing good looking football. They’ve also said that they may spend two months finding a new manager because they want to ensure that they get the best available.

Diego Maradona had been touted as the favourite to take over the club but the owners ruled him out saying that they would prefer a British manager, although they would consider any nationality if the new man fit the role perfectly. For now, the dubious honour falls upon Steve Kean, whose first match will be against bottom of the table West Ham this weekend. Under different circumstances maybe Kean would have relished the opportunity at management but you have to wonder how he feels right now.

In all honesty, and while Allardyce is probably still reeling from the decision, he’s better off out of there. There have been reports that the new chicken breeders are only giving GBP6m as a transfer kitty which would only buy a portion of a top five team player. What’s next for Blackburn? Who knows and who would be brave enough to have a guess?

New Wales Manager Gary Speed Looking To Bring Back Savage And Giggs

Posted on 15. Dec, 2010 by .

Gary Speed has only been the Wales manager for about a day but he’s already making the right sounds as far as most of the country’s supporters believe. Robby Savage has said that he is willing to come out of international retirement for the 41 year old while Speed is also believed to be interested in bringing Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs back from a similar position of international retirement.

Former manager Toshack seemed to do a good job of ridding himself of any experience from his squad of players and while Wales do have a stable of promising youngsters, the stars of the future need some experience to help guide them through. Speed has said that he intends to spend the next few weeks ringing around the current and former Wales players to try and determine exactly who will be available for action.

A call to Savage isn’t necessary as the Derby player has already publicly said that he is definitely available for selection should Speed deem him worthy. He also added that he didn’t expect to be chosen just because he’s friends with the new manager but does believe that his experience along with the experience of players like Giggs would help the younger generation of players to develop into better and more accomplished players.

Whoever comes back out of international retirement and is picked to play could face England in two qualifiers next season and this may be extra incentive for some of them to don their international boots once more.

Manchester United Back On Top Following 1-0 Win Over Rivals Arsenal

Posted on 13. Dec, 2010 by .

The relationship between managers Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson may have mellowed over recent years but when it comes to a clash between the two teams that would determine who would be leading the table you can bet that the competition is a fierce one.

While the game itself did little to prove this point, however, it was Manchester United that came out on top of a scrappy goal thanks to a brilliantly placed Park Ji Sung header iat the end of the first half. Life should haev been even easier but for a missed penalty by Wayne Rooney.

Going into the match, Arsenal were top of the table and Manchester United down in third place although with a game in hand over their rivals. There had been much build up especially between the players but it was seemingly Evra that was proven right and United that kept up their excellent home record.

Chelsea had once again squandered the opportunity to hit the peak of the table with a draw against Tottenham at the weekend making it only one win in 7 matches for them but all eyes were on Manchester today for a match that has produced more red cards and goals than most others in previous seasons.

It was, in all honesty, a drab affair and one that the Chilean miners, who were in attendance following a personal invitation from Sir Bobby Charlton, would possibly rather have missed. David Beckham, who was also in the stands, would have certainly enjoyed the result though.

Can Manchester City Score Without Carlos Tevez?

Posted on 10. Dec, 2010 by .

In the kind of star studded lineup that would cost too much for a fantasy football manager to put together, Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has emerged as the main man for the Eastlands outfit netting 33 times in 50 appearances since his arrival from city rivals Manchester United, but while his goals have helped City to climb the table and get a little closer to the glory of their red counterparts the Argentinian is also proving to be the saviour of a team that has only won once all season when he hasn’t played.

Last month’s 2-0 defeat of West Brom is the only match that City have won when Tevez has not been in the side but boss Roberto Mancini is hoping that his side will be able to improve on that record when they face Tevez’s former club West Ham this weekend. The striker is ruled out of action having picked up five yellow cards.

City are certainly not without plays of star calibre. In the absence of Tevez it looks likely that the young Italian Balotelli will move to a more central role. He has impressed when he has played but his season has been blighted by injuries and other setbacks.

West Ham currently sit at the very bottom of the table and the match should prove an opportunity for Man City to score some goals and lose the tag of being a one man team at least for a short while.

Lotus And Renault Form Lotus Renault GP Strategic F1 Partnership

Posted on 08. Dec, 2010 by .

Group Lotus has agreed to a strategic partnership with Renault to create the Lotus Renault GP team which will contest the 2011 Formula 1 season. Group Lotus will become a major equity partner in the team and will enjoy naming rights until 2017 and it means that Renault will chiefly become engine suppliers to the teams they currently deal with – namely, the newly formed Lotus Renault, Red Bull, and Team Lotus which may now face a name change.

There’s been some debate over the exact position that Lotus would take in the new season and this partnership gives Lotus a way to develop cars and brand themselves in the F1 arena. They will be driving in a gold and black livery, which are the colours that team Lotus had already said that they would be driving under.

Having undergone some difficulties in the past, Lotus has unveiled some highly ambitious plans to help reinvent themselves and further improve on the name they already have. They have announced a range of road cars and have also said that they will be competing in the Le Mans race and Indy Car racing in the US.

Renault are effectively ending their team owner status, which they have held for 10 years since buying Benetton Formula back in 2000. They will retain major sponsorship placement on the Lotus cars which was considered a critical part of the deal and can cost companies huge amounts of money.
