Total Film Magazine reports that George Lucas has deemed 3D technology worthy of the Star Wars franchise as he has declared that there are now enough cinemas with the capability to show the sci-fi films in full 3D. The first film, which is unfortunately the Phantom Menace will be released in 2012 and the rest will follow in order if they prove popular enough. Lucas has also said that all 6 of the films will be made available on Blu-Ray giving you yet another way to line the pickets of Lucas Arts… sorry, we mean watch all of the improved versions.

Lucas has expressed concerns over whether there would be enough venues to warrant paying for the re-rendering into 3D although he has expressed his itnerest in 3D in general especially for other titles that could potentially hit our 3D glasses soon.

As more and more cinemas across the world open their doors to the 3D viewing public, we are clearly now deemed worthy enough that Lucas Arts would repay some of the luducrous following that Star Trek has gained over the years.

The love from Lucas definitely isn’t unconditional. The only guaranteed release of any of the films is The Phantom Menace which is arguably the worst and almost certainly the least popular of them all. This will hit cinemas in 2012 and Lucas has said that if, and presumably only if, this proves to be popular enough then the remaining 5 films will also be converted to 3D and aired.
